  • Karen

    Dr. Karen M. Black

Dr. Karen Black graduated from the University of British Columbia’s D.M.D. program in 1983, after first having completed her Bachelor of Science at the University of Victoria. Upon receiving her D.M.D., she moved to Bathurst, New Brunswick, to join her husband-to-be, Mark. Dr. Karen started up a small dental practice in Bathurst and was soon known in the community as a very patient and compassionate dentist. She pursued her commitment to continuing education by travelling to courses and symposia across North America and was also active in the New Brunswick Dental Society and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Karen’s two children were born during her stint in New Brunswick, keeping her a very busy working mom!

In 1993, Dr. Karen and her family moved to Manitouwadge, a small mining town in northern Ontario. There she again ran her own dental practice and enjoyed the unique life in a small northern town. Three years later she and her husband decided to return to his hometown, Maple Ridge. Dr. Karen purchased a well-established dental practice from the retiring Dr. Ron Moore. Here, Dr. Karen continues to treat her patients with care and compassion. She continues to pursue excellence through frequent continuing education courses, seminars and study clubs. She is also a member of the B.C. FORT Forensic Dentistry Team. In 2006, Dr. Karen was presented with the prestigious Academy of General Dentistry Fellowship Award.

Her current interests included reading, writing, downhill skiing, and music. She is pursuing a life-long dream of taking piano lessons and music theory. She is a percussionist and plays drums with a variety of local ensembles.

  • Grace

    Dr. Grace Yan

Dr. Grace Yan graduated from University of Western Ontario Dental Doctor and Surgeon (DDS) degree on the Dean’s Honor List, after completing her undergraduate degree in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at University of Toronto. She’s an active member of the Academy of General Dentistry and believes strongly in continuing education. She loves the diversity that dentistry has to offer and finds nothing more satisfying than restoring beautiful smiles in her patients. She has been on a dental mission trip to Guatemala and volunteered at the DOCS program in London, Ontario, providing dental care to underserved patients.

Although Dr. Yan completed all her post-secondary education in Ontario, she is actually from the sunny island called Singapore. When asked what she misses most about Singapore, it has to be all the local cuisines. In her free time, she tries to master some traditional Singaporean dishes. Dr. Yan moved to the west coast in 2013 and has been loving it since. She loves to do yoga, take photo walks and go on hikes.

  • Kelly

    Kelly, RDH

Kelly is our Registered Dental Hygienist and we were delighted to have her join our hygiene team in 2009. Kelly is a native of Greater Vancouver, or as she says, “born and raised a Vancouverite”. Her youth was spent in Port Coquitlam and she moved to Maple Ridge in 1999. She is a graduate of Pitt Meadows Secondary School. Kelly has worked in dentistry for over 20 years, 16 years as a certified dental assistant and as a hygienist since 2009. As a hygienist, her main area of concern and expertise is her patient’s periodontal health. She is particularly interested in assuring each patient of a positive experience as well as a thorough cleaning.

Kelly leads a very busy home life with her family and Xena, their “seven pound mutt.” In between the children’s hockey, skating and bowling activities Kelly likes to get out on Alouette Lake with the kids and the dog. She also likes just going for a nice walk when she gets a moment. Her sense of balance and easy-going nature serve her well both at home and here at the office!

Rhoda lives in Mission with her husband and two sons. She is kept busy schedules for her active family. She is an outdoor enthusiast, loves to hike, bike and especially to kayak. She can even be found carving some downhill ski tracks in the winter. “Any activity, any season, as long as I am outside!” she says!

Shelley joined our team in 2015. Having lived in Maple Ridge all her life, Shelley is thrilled to be able to work in her hometown. She trained in Tae Kwon Do for six years, culminating in her second degree black belt.
